Discovering the Charms of
San Antonio

A Journey through San Miguel de Allende's Artistic Neighborhood

Colonia San Antonio, the largest neighborhood in town, hosts many of the high-end restaurants, boutiques and art galleries that make San Miguel de Allende one of the world’s top tourist destinations; while preserving the historical authenticity and cultural integrity that contributed to the city being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In a city known for its challenging mountainous terrain, San Antonio is loved for being the most walkable area with the least steep hills in the historic part of town. Situated just a short walking distance from the city's vibrant Centro and Parque Juarez, it is also very easy to access through its axis roads that lead to all main highways. This proximity ensures that residents enjoy a seamless blend of peacefulness and convenience.

On the eastern limits of the neighborhood is Stirling Dickinson, a street named in honor of a beloved artist-adventurer from Chicago who arrived in 1937 looking for a quiet place to write his third book. As it happens, San Miguel captured his heart and he never left. When he arrived, the colonial town founded in 1542 by Spaniards was practically abandoned and was facing an uncertain future after an influenza pandemic and the decline of silver mining.

Stirling Dickinson is known as the person most responsible for reviving San Miguel de Allende and shaping its future by turning it into an international art haven. He was co-founder and director of the two main art schools that attracted a significant number of foreign art students, Escuela Universitaria de Bellas Artes and Instituto Allende, and founded the town’s first public library, famous for housing one of the largest collections of books in English in Latin America, among his many other cherished feats.

Stirling Dickinson Street is crowned by the superb Real de Minas Hotel and features gorgeous street murals, top-quality restaurants, coffee shops and art galleries, collectively known as Distrito Stirling where, together with the many beautiful venues on La Ancha de San Antonio main avenue, you can find outstanding dining, live music shows and art events every day of the week.

Known as the SoHo of San Miguel, Colonia San Antonio features My Studio Art Walks, a beloved weekend event when more than 50 artists open the doors to their studios and galleries located in the neighborhood and, guided by colorful maps and door signs, the public is welcomed to walk in and have a drink with the artists while admiring their work and space.

On the western front of the neighborhood you’ll find Mercado Sano, a collective market of natural and sustainable products, plus its famous TOSMA marketplace on Saturday mornings offering organic produce, baked goods, crafts, live music, delicious traditional foods and friendly gatherings.

San Antonio is also famous for its safety. Well-lit streets, proactive community engagement, strong sense of neighborhood unity, well-maintained infrastructure and security measures all contribute to a peaceful environment in which residents feel secure and at ease. As a result, San Antonio offers an inviting haven for families, retirees, and individuals who wish to enjoy a vibrantly engaging atmosphere.

For those seeking an idyllic property investment in San Miguel de Allende, the San Antonio neighborhood beckons with its easy access, friendly spirit and zestful local community centered around the San Antonio de Padua Church. San Antonio presents an abundance of outdoor activities, where residents enjoy a fulfilling and active lifestyle in the heart of San Miguel de Allende.

The artistic Barrio of
Guadalupe, urban art everywhere

A Journey through San Miguel de Allende's Artistic Neighborhood

Colonia Guadalupe is nestled within the Laja River to the north and west, and the avenues of Calzada de la Luz and Calzada de la Aurora to the south and east. This urban gem holds a special place in the heart of the city, not only for its calm atmosphere but also for the unique blend of local flair and artistic soul that define the area.

Strolling through the streets of this friendly neighborhood is akin to stepping into an open-air gallery, lined with captivating murals waiting to be discovered around every corner. Colonia Guadalupe has evolved into a vibrant sanctuary for the artistically-inclined. The neighborhood's walls have become sprawling canvases, adorned with intricate and captivating murals that tell the stories of Mexico's rich cultural heritage. Many of these murals showcase themes from Huichol mythology, while others celebrate the multicultural soul of San Miguel de Allende, expressed through colorful and thought-provoking pieces.

Clearly marking the border of Colonia Guadalupe is Las Cachinches, a stream born at the foot of the Obraje Dam and flowing into the Allende Dam. Due to its strategic location, it is one of the most important bodies of water in San Miguel de Allende. Along the stream you will find a well-cared path where people love to exercise.

One of the most remarkable features of Colonia Guadalupe is its close proximity to the iconic Parroquia in the heart of downtown. In just a 15-minute leisurely walk, you can find yourself standing in awe of the city's breathtaking centerpiece. Halfway through the stroll you will find Mercado de Artesanías, a vibrant market that captures the essence of Mexican craftsmanship. This enchanting marketplace offers an array of handcrafted treasures, from intricate pottery and colorful textiles to exquisite jewelry and traditional leather goods. Strolling through the market's narrow alleys, visitors are treated to a feast of colors and textures as skilled artisans proudly display their creations.

With its own distinctive allure, the quaint Guadalupe neighborhood offers organic food stores and fine restaurants dotting the streets with a special local charm. What makes these establishments unique is that they are run by residents who cherish their happy area and visitors. Their friendly and relaxed disposition is a testament to their proud sense of community.

Just across the avenue is one of the city’s main attractions, the famous Fabrica La Aurora. Housed in what was once a thriving textile factory throughout the 1900s, this massive building is now a beautiful art and design center. Artist studios, art galleries, and stores boasting an array of antiques, furniture, textiles, jewelry and clothing are happily hosted in this wonderful space. Amidst this artistic paradise, you'll find delightful restaurants and charming cafés, perfect spots to meet the most interesting people for creative inspiration.
